Two things change at once. Vedic astrology reads the Moon rather than the Sun, and it measures against the sidereal zodiac fixed to the stars instead of the tropical one fixed to the equinox. The offset between the two β the Lahiri ayanamsa, currently around 24Β° β is subtracted from the tropical longitude, which is why a rashi usually lands one sign earlier than people expect.
The Moon crosses a sign in roughly two and a half days, so most birthdays land clearly inside one. Near a boundary, though, the time of day decides it, and the lunar model used here carries about two degrees of uncertainty. Enter a birth time if you have one.
