What each of the five limbs is
Tithi is the lunar day, one of thirty, marked off every 12° that the Moon pulls ahead of the Sun — fifteen in the waxing Shukla half and fifteen in the waning Krishna half. Nakshatra is the 13°20′ segment the Moon occupies, one of twenty-seven. Yoga adds the two sidereal longitudes together and divides that by the same 13°20′. Karana is half a tithi, and vara is simply the weekday.
