Born in January or early February? Your animal is the previous year's
The zodiac year does not turn over on 1 January. It turns at the start of spring — around 4 February — the same boundary the four pillars of destiny use for the year pillar. So anyone born before that date is counted under the previous year's animal. Plenty of quick lookup tables get this wrong, which is why people with early-year birthdays are often told the wrong animal.
Animal, element and polarity
The twelve animals cycle every twelve years and the five elements every ten, so the same animal-and-element pairing comes back only once every sixty years. Polarity simply follows whether the year is even or odd. The character readings are borrowed from long-standing tradition and are here to enjoy, not to predict anything.
